Situated on a high mountain crest along the Aterno valley, in the beautiful valle Subequana, the municipality includes also the "frazioni" Beffi, Succiano, S.Lorenzo and Roccapreturo

Of its Lombard origin Acciano still keeps the layout of a fortified borough with three doors. In the XIV century it was ruled by Matteo Gentile, then until the late XVIII century belonged to the Piccolominis. The name, it seems, may derive from a Roman landowner Accius, who established in the place that was after him called "Villa Acciani"

XV-century Fountain; probabilmente di origine longobarda, conserva ancora i caratteri di borgo fortificato, al quale si accedeva da tre porte, mantenendo pertanto un notevole valore di carattere ambientale

Beffi, the sighting towers and the medieval village. In epoca medioevale era parte integrante del sistema di avvistamento di difesa della città dell'Aquila. Di notevole interesse i resti del borgo fortificato originario che conserva la torre di avvistamento che insieme alla torre di Goriano dall'altra parte della Valle controllavano il confine del Contado dell'Aquila.
